I have been looking at designing themes for my personal blog for some time and looked for free themes. I don’t like buying themes as they are quite costly for just a personal blog site. Sensitive
Sensitive is a fully responsive theme built using Twitter’s Bootstrap framework with Metro Styled Accent. It ships with three different page templates, support for custom backgrounds and menus. It’s a great option if you’re looking for clean and modern, without a lot of fussy code.
Customizr
Customizr is the most customizable free theme I’ve ever come across. It comes with eight skins and a responsive slider generator. It also has a theme options panel, multi-layouts, threaded comments and nine post formats.
If you want to really get stuck into customizing this theme, there is a custom CSS panel and DEV tools. The DEV tools include a developer dashboard giving you an overview of your theme settings and useful information for debug and development. You can also turn on embedded tooltips.
This theme also makes extensive use of WordPress hooks and also has its own hooks API. Code snippets are a new feature.
Twenty Fourteen
A list of free, responsive themes wouldn’t be complete without Twenty Fourteen. The default WordPress theme features a sleek design and allows you to display your homepage content in either a grid or slider.
There are three widgetized areas to customize your site, and you change your content’s layout with a full-width page template and a contributor page to showcase your authors.
Copa
Copa utilises the latest technologies in WordPress including custom menus, backgrounds and featured images. This fantastic General/Blog theme boasts easy-to-use admin options and widgets.
Oxygen
Oxygen is a minimalistic, mobile-optimized magazine theme with responsive layout. The main features include a featured content slider, custom front page template, 5 widget areas, and 3 menus.
